LIGA CUBANA
In 1866, student Memesio Guillot terurned from the United Stated with the implements of a strange new game called "Base Ball." Cuba has not been the same since. Just 12 years later, the famed Almendares and
Habana clubs were formed.
Cuba was fertile ground for local base bailer!
as well as a haven for Negro Leaguers from
the U.S., who could play year - round while avoiding the racial bias they faced back in the States. White major league teams, too,
held spring training camps in Cuba. Despite the ending of professional ball in 1961, Cuba remains a world base ball power,
and home to some of the finest players and most knowledgeable fans anywhere.
